I went to Madrid in May and got lucky to stay at the recently renovated Barcelo, Gran Torre de Madrid. This 5 star hotel is located on Plaza de España at the beginning of the famous Gran Via (Madrid’s main street) and is only a 10-minute walk from the Royal Palace. It is part of a 142m tall building which used to be the tallest concrete building in the world untill 1982.
When you walk in you find a beautiful lobby with a gigantic zebra striped bear greeting you. You immediately feel this unconventional atmosphere. Everything is signed by contemporary artist designer Jaime Hayon, from the furniture to the mirror plays, the beautiful pictures on the wall and the playful use of colors. To celebrate your arrival you might want to stop by the Garra Bar also located in the lobby area which looks like a set of the Gatsby movie, so fancy 🙂
There is a total of 256 rooms in the hotel which are beautifully decorated too, some offering impressive views of Gran Via and Plaza de España. You probably will want to pick one with an outdoor balcony.
Barcelo Torre de Madrid will also provide its share of relaxation with a beautiful indoor metal swimming pool and a Spa with treatment rooms on the 8th floor. And since some might want to enjoy the sun, they can walk up one floor to a wide terrace with long chairs… Bliss!
Finally, Madrid being known for its great food, the hotel offers a very nice selection of dishes in its SOMOS restaurant also facing the city! I suggest your make your reservation at Sunset, it is a delight 🙂
