Have you ever dreamt of a city worthy of a thousand and one nights’ story? Well it’s time to head to the blue city of Chefchaouen! Surrounded by the Rif mountains, 600 meters above sea level in northwestern Morocco, Chefchaouen will immerse you in a relaxing and exotic universe. Get ready for an intense experience in the heart of the city known as « The Blue Pearl ».

How to get to Chefchaouen?

The best way to get there is to fly to Tangier. Several airlines offer this trip from Paris airports and it only takes under 3 hours to get there. Once in Tangier you can rent the services of a private driver who will take you directly to your hotel in the heart of the blue city. The advantage, when using a private driver, is the air conditioning and bottled water which are highly appreciated with the temperatures in Morocco. You can also be lucky and have the Wifi available too. The journey from Tangier lasts about 2 hours and will cost you 89 € (one way).
I personally booked through this company:

Where to stay in the blue city?

The city is full of hotels and riads but the best option if you want to enjoy your stay to the fullest and soak up the atmosphere of the city, is to stay in the heart of the Medina. The city center, with lime houses painted in shades of blue, is so peaceful and surprisingly not overcrowded with tourists. Choosing a hotel with a spa is a significant luxury when you spend your days wandering the streets or hiking in the surrounding mountains. I personally chose the hotel Lina Ryad & Spa which offers spacious rooms with views of the Medina and the mountains, a spa with pool and a huge rooftop terrace. It will cost you approximately 130 €  for a junior suite.

What to do in Chefchaouen?

  • Enrich your Instagram account: the blue pearl of Morocco is a flagship destination for photographers. Its colors, its mountains and its sunsets are worthy of a dream postcard landscape
  • Walk the Medina: it is a real haven of peace. I spent 2 days getting lost in the many alleys. Its main square, Uta el-Hammam, has many cafes and terraces
  • Look for Aladdin’s flying carpet: in addition to its different shades of blue, a color chosen to repel insects (so I read!) The city displays rugs for sale on its walls, adding an extra touch of color
  • Visit the Kasbah: located in the main square and built in 1471, the Kasbah served as a refuge during the wars of religion
  • Be breath taken by the panorama: from the mosque of Jemaa Bouzafar located 200 meters above the city
  • Enjoy local cuisine: tajines, couscous, oriental pastries and mint tea… there is no possibility of eating anything bad in Morocco! I advise you to have lunch or dinner on the rooftop of the Aladdin restaurant (it has the most magnificent views, and sunset is of the most romantics I have ever witnessed)
  • Go hiking: various programs are offered to discover the forests, rivers and waterfalls of the surrounding Rif Mountains.

Chefchaouen is a real dream destination located less than 5 hours from Paris. If you’ve ever heard of  “La vie en rose”, get read to experience “La vie en bleu” 🙂
